What gives you purpose?

For my entire life so far, I have been wondering and exploring the purpose of life – why am I here? what is the point? I used to think life had to be a certain way (boy was I wrong) until I broke it all down, or in other words I broke down. It was only until through my depression where I fell into the pits of pure oblivion to myself and woke up to everything around me. I remember travelling to the most beautiful parts of the world and feeling absolutely nothing. I saw nothing in my life and therefore was feeling nothing towards life and the fact of being here. I had no purpose left, I remember googling ‘what is the purpose of life’ and these were some of the various themed answers I got:

  • We can’t know the meaning for sure, or if there is one
  • There is no purpose
  • To be happy
  • It’s up to you
  • To love
  • It’s a pathway to self realisation
  • For the soul to evolve in its spiritual journey to a higher power
  • To follow a god and go to heaven
  • To make as much money as I can
  • A continuation of species

So what gave me purpose? Myself.

At different stages of my life according to my personal experiences, I had a different purpose in distinct points of time. When you look back at your own life, you may notice all the times you broke down you lost a sense of purpose and found a new one. I thought I lost my purpose through a negative life experience I had at the time (or you could call it the what felt like a death, an ending of a relationship which we can all relate to somehow) something that gave me a purpose in that point of time when all along I always had one because life doesn’t have to be so complex.

So coming back from all of that into the present moment, what gives me purpose in this current moment? Well, first I like to look at what motivates me, what I’m good at and what I enjoy. Personally for me and it may be completely different for you, my purpose here is to live, to live is to feel whether it be a negative or a positive experience – it all has a purpose. Ultimately, it’s your choice to create your purpose by allowing what makes you feel most alive in your life. Even when you’re lacking to find one, you always have one because you are already here – you are one.

Let’s look at it physically and scientifically in accordance to our birth, there are about 100 million sperms that try to swim all the way up the fallopian tubes to the egg which is only present for 12-24 hours after ovulation.. if there was an egg even released in that cycle. All of this turns into a baby that knows how to grow all on its own, also was once you and I (we were once upon a time half a sperm and egg). When you break it all down – there are so many odd chances of actually being born, how does the sperm even know where to go? how on earth does the baby know what to do to grow and look after itself in the womb?! It turns from the size of a poppy seed to an actual baby, an intellectual force that cannot even be explained or comprehended to this day even by the best scientists. There are some things in this world that cannot be explained and maybe they aren’t supposed to.

You were chosen to be here on this earth, you chose to be here and you were always strong and wise even before you were born. Being here is a literal miracle, we’re all walking miracles.

Maybe it’s all wrong, there could be no point of being here but why the hell not do your best while you are and enjoy yourself as much as you can. No matter what, the future of our world and our inner worlds are affected by each and every one of us. Our interactions in our day to day lives whether it be on the road, at work or with a friend or lover are all impacted through our experiences now and into the future.
