We all know it as a natural gateway to escape from the reality of everyday life and beyond this it is proven to be beneficial to our moods and our overall health. We can heal our bodies physically, emotionally, energetically and spiritually with the ocean.
Indulging in a visit to the underworld of the sea is truly a given treasure in our world. It isn’t a secret anymore that the ocean has its natural healing effects, from hydrating the skin to improving blood circulation. The ocean contains a range of minerals including salt (sodium chloride), potassium, magnesium (a high content in dead sea salt), amino acids, as well as microorganisms that produce natural antibiotic and antibacterial effects while swimming. The animo acids found in the ocean and in our bodies are the building blocks of protein and protein makes up 30% of our body. This 30% is a mixed portion of our cells, muscles and tissues and they are all made up of these amino acids where they assist in giving our cells structure and are essential for healing wounds, repairing muscles, bones, skin and hair. Factors such as pollution to our bodies done by smoking and drinking prevent our bodies to completely use what we eat as fuel, so this is where amino acids aid by replacing what we lose. We can get it for free, as simple and enjoyable as going for a swim, otherwise we don’t even have to go for a swim because as little as looking at the ocean for 10 minutes can improve our mind state. Breathing in the sea mist boosts our immunity by the tiny molecules in the mist attaching to our lungs and when we go for a swim the skins pores open to allow proper absorption of all these sea minerals, as well as allow the process of the skin to release any disease causing toxins from the body. As a natural nutritious source for our skin, it reduces any skin inflammation, redness and hydrates.
We now dive even deeper than the physical and emotional when looking into how the ocean can heal our body.
The Lakota tribes value water as a ‘Being of Life’. They define water as a First Consciousness bestowed upon Mother Earth, which is the “awareness of the movement that sustains life in a continuum”. Tiokasin Ghosthorse, member of the Native American – Lakota Nation explains this connection as water being a cup of stars. “When you put that cup of water to your mouth and drink, you are drinking a cup of the stars. You see the glimmering lights and reflections of the sun on the waters of the earth”.
El Consejo Maya Mam te Txe Chaman, an ancestral governing body of the Maya Mam native tribe explain how the ocean and rivers are the blood of Mother Earth, a sacred water. “Her blood flows giving life to the animals, plants, mountains, and humanity. To us, the Maya, we honor our sacred water for one full day every twenty days, calling on the energy of Imox, the water, to help give us life and to cleanse and nurture us. Before we plant our sacred crops, we hold ceremonies to call on the rain to nourish all the seeds and to ask for permission for this planting. At the end of our harvest, we again give thanks to our sacred waters for nourishing our sacred corn and all plant life and thank the water for giving us food and sustenance. Our bodies as humans are made largely of water, and since the time we are in our mother’s womb, we are connected with the water and the rhythm of grandmother moon. These are teachings that are passed down from our elders, the spiritual leaders, our medicine people, and the midwives. These are imprints of our ancestral DNA and the thread that connects us to the cycles of time and our environment”.
Whether we are aware of it or not, we interact and connect with water on a daily basis by showering, splashing water on our face, cleaning our teeth and drinking it. We can heal, connect, speak to, cleanse, create blessings and manifestations with water in the ocean. Sit with it and speak to it, let it wash away all your concerns and share with it your dreams so it can send it out to the rest of the universe and beyond. Pat McCabe, a Navajo and Lakota activist explains how she speaks to water and works in unity with the ocean by connecting, initiating manifestations and blessings.
