Welcoming the Winter Solstice

“When you are aligned with your soul…
you are grateful, blessed, open, receptive,
full of unconditional love, joy, acceptance,
surrounded by a radiant glow,
whilst you wear a rainbow cloak
and share all these with those who come into our paths”

The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. The word ‘solstice’ is derived from the Latin word solstitium, sol meaning sun and stitium meaning stoppage. On the opposite side of the world, they would be celebrating the Summer Solstice. During the solstice the sun reaches the highest point in the sky and there is a perfect harmony of polar opposites; ying/yang, light and dark, night and day.

During our time in the Winter Solstice we can reflect on our journey’s and embrace what we have explored and what is yet to come. It is a time of hope, a hope that brings the darkness to an end and a welcoming for light. It is a magical time for renewal, where we can see what we have overcome with light, let it go and welcome more light. It’s always magical to celebrate the welcoming of the Winter Solstice and how you want to do it is up to you. I began mine by attending a beautiful meditation group on a farm where we focused on powerful visualisations and affirmations to welcome the light into our lives and letting go of the darkness that had passed. During my meditation I experienced my higher self ascending into light in a floating motion and I saw myself wearing a rainbow cloak around my shoulders. I decided I could wear this cloak no matter where I went from now on.

I did some journalling and made a list of all the darkness I had overcome recently in my life and had turned into light, and what I could turn into light next. Reflecting upon life I realised a lot of my insecurities, I questioned why I was bringing darkness into my life by focusing on them and reflected upon the greatness and relevant beauty behind it all. I began to consider my ‘shadow self’, which are challenging aspects of myself and acknowledged this for being a part of me, along with ways I could tune this into more light. I realised how at different intervals of my life I always had something to be unhappy about and even now I still do this. All humans do this, our biggest problem is that we always find some fault or focus on what we lack when we have everything we need right now. I could be embracing everything I have right now, it’s everything I wanted when I was looking at what I was lacking before and now I had been doing it all over again now.

I wondered why are we always seeking people in our exterior worlds to fulfil and be our guiding lights? Of course everyone is our teacher, however the universe speaks to those who listen and our true answers lie in our internal compass. I have discovered that when we stop searching, that’s when our answer appears.

I walked along the river and trees near home, it was so calm and the water was barely moving. I found myself overthinking so I shifted my focus outwards to the world around me and listened to the birds. I focused on the stillness of the river. I watched it ripple and a fish began jumping around in the ocean. It’s amazing what you can actually see once you switch your internal world off and focus on where you are.

I felt like running, my intuition was telling me to so I began to run. I saw the wharf in the distance with the last of the sun beaming down onto it and decided I would run there. As I was running I heard, ‘run towards inspiration, run towards gratitude, joy, forgiveness, dreams, creativity, love’. Once I arrived at my destination I saw a radiant sunset amongst the mountain with a streak of rainbow hues next to it. I couldn’t see anything below this, it was too dark as the light from the sun was so bright but I was aware of the river below and around me. This forced me to sit with the light, the mountain and breathe it all in and that’s when I thought to myself.. this moment is exactly what I need to do more of in my life.

Here are the blessings I feel deep gratitude for:

  • To have my body to experience the world in and be able to embrace my sensitivity as an empath.
  • To have a home, a bed to sleep in every night, a shower to wash in and food to eat every day.
  • To have clean water to drink.
  • A loving family of my own (which I don’t own but get to share my journey with).
  • To have a positive small but close network of loving family and friends.
  • To have acquired skills and knowledge throughout my life.
  • A healthy body that can see, walk and run.
  • To breathe, be alive and have the opportunity to experience on such a beautiful planet.

I have been trying to consciously feel this deep gratitude in my everyday experiences and when I do it makes me feel so much more open to myself, others and receptive with my creativity.

Thank you Winter Solstice for bringing more light into my world!
